Hamilton has always been a very political show. Written by Lin Manuel Miranda, He wanted to reintroduce the importance of immigrants in the US history. With a first diverse cast composed of people of colors representing white historical figures, the show made quite the noise for its launching in 2015.
After the historical election of Zohran Mamdani in New York, a democrat man which was born in Uganda, the production of Hamilton performed like every other night but made quite the impression. At the line "immigrants, we get the job done" it took another turn and resonated with the latest events. People started applauding, showing an echo with the new election result and a support for the new mayor alongside with all the immigrants in New York who made this city and its history.
Theatre has always been political, as an art it shows convictions, hope and the condition of a generation, from Shakespeare’s plays to the latest musical, it has always been an expression form and is inseparable from politics.
Hamilton has always been political, relating history facts, showing the importance of democracy and all the work that immigrants done especially after knowing that Alexander Hamilton himself, one of the founding father was an immigrant, just like Lafayette, another important figure of American History.
Recently, for the 10 years anniversary of Hamilton, the original cast had a reunion at the Tony Awards, the equivalent of the Oscars for the musical theatre sphere. It happened just after the reelection of President Donald Trump. They were all wearing wearing black, mourning except for king George, played by Jonathan Groff wearing red and singing nonsense while everyone repeated without understanding the meaning. This allegory show the state of the United States of America and the necessity to keep vocal and keep making art about it.
